Common Questions About Work Permits
Find answers to the most common questions about Canadian work permits and the application process.
❓ What is the main difference between TFWP and IMP work permits?
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) requires employers to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) proving no Canadians were available for the job. The International Mobility Program (IMP) is LMIA-exempt, created for trade agreements or intra-company transfers.
❓ How long does GTS (Global Talent Stream) processing take?
IRCC maintains an expedited 2-week processing SLA for Global Talent Stream (GTS) work permit applications for qualified technology professionals.
❓ Can my spouse work in Canada if I get a work permit?
Yes, spouses or common-law partners of skilled foreign work permit holders are eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit, allowing them to work for any employer in Canada.
❓ How do I check my application status using the reference number?
Navigate to the Track Application tab, enter your Application Reference Number (e.g., CAN-2026-89412), Passport Number, and Place of Birth to load your live record and issued documents.
